Ghost
Ghost’s influence may be more extensive than its musical output, but the long-running Japanese psych-rock band continues to draw a greater cult fan base over time. Founded in 1984 by core member Masaki Batoh, the band combines classic avant-rock like Pink Floyd and The Velvet Underground with experimental Japanese groups like Taj Mahal Travellers. With elements of krautrock, psych-folk, and even free jazz, Ghost has refined its sound around Batoh’s enigmatic stage presence and guitarist Michio Kurihara’s (of Japanese heavy-metal outfit Boris) incomparable playing. Though it’s been two years since they released 2007’s In Stormy Nights, Batoh and co. still have the unpredictable dexterity of a fresh-faced newcomer.
