Artist Glass Candy

A Portland band that began with a sound pitched toward disco-ventilated post-punk and no-wave noise, Glass Candy banged around the indie underground with a handful of releases for Troubleman Unlimited before becoming the flagship band for TU’s sub-label Italians Do It Better (co-founded by the band’s guitarist Johnny Jewel), a more electronic-minded collective that favors cool, icy winds and comely vocal purrs over yelp and skronk. As such, Glass Candy has smoothed out its more loose-limbed lurches in favor of studied dance-floor sleekness and songs with an ear for catchy pop hooks—though the main attraction is still singer Ida No, a jaw-dropping frontwoman on par with Debbie Harry in her prime. The band’s much buzzed about new record, Body Work, is due out sometime this year.
