Working from sonic snatches both foreign and familiar, London beatmaker Gold Panda creates a dreamy atmosphere on 2010’s Lucky Shiner. It’s a psychedelic sampler swirl where buzzing sitars brush up against the heavy thump of kick drums, a glitchy world that’s suitable for massive woofers and tweeters as well as headphones. Lucky Shiner won’t exactly set feet to moving on the dance floor, but it’s a document of powerful electronic soundscaping with tracks that contain international multitudes and instrumental breaks that speak volumes. Since Lucky Shiner, Gold Panda’s been keeping himself busy with a series of EPs incorporating both new material and Lucky Shinerremixes. His latest, Companion, combines three 2009 EPs on one full-length.
