Golden Birthday
With two full-length albums under its belt, Golden Birthday’s take on new-wave dream-pop sounds distances itself from the beloved jangly guitars and militant drums of early new-wave forerunners, such as New Order and Joy Division, and follows a more psychedelic path. Taking the heavily modulated approach characteristic of fellow psych-pop projects like Soft Moon or Neon Indian, GB employs vocal choruses, warbled bass, and generously bent synth drones for a joyous expression of danceable psychedelia, at times sounding like a modern-day Afro-funk band. Crossbreed the ethereal haze of Slowdive with the punchy new-wave of Happy Mondays or OMD, and you might hear one of GB’s beautifully crafted pop songs.
