HOLIDAY SALE AT THE ONION STORE

Artist Green River Ordinance

For a band named after a non-solicitation law, Green River Ordinance knows how to work grassroots marketing to get its name out there. The Forth Worth, Texas group plays slow, soaring power ballads in the vein of popular ’90s alternative also-rans like Matchbox Twenty. After releasing Out of My Hands in 2009, GRO set out to record its follow-up on its own funded entirely by fan donations. In exchange for monetary support, the band has offered to play private house shows, name songs after donors, and prime placement in the liner notes, among other perks. According to its website GRO has already raised over $40,000; here’s hoping the actual record is anywhere near as impressive.
