Artist Greg Ashley

  • Greg Ashley

If your favorite Beatles track is “Revolution No. 9,” you’ll find a lot to like in Greg Ashley’s trippy, randomly constructed psych-pop. The former Gris Gris leader’s assemblage of free-form sounds and lyrics is the kind of surreal, hypnotically lulling stuff that generally gets slapped with an “experimental” tag and left alone, immediately dismissed by some and relentlessly dissected by others. In that sense he has a lot in common with fellow Texas-bred psych progenitors Roky Erickson and Mayo Thompson, lysergic legends who loom heavily over the current psych revival.
