Gregg Allman
His greatest work is well behind him, but Gregg Allman made enough music and attracted enough fans in the late ’60s and early ’70s to last a lifetime. The legacy of The Allman Brothers Band is extensive—it’s hard to imagine the jam scene existing without the group—and its devotees are fervent. Although the group still tours, its members have sizable followings as solo artists, including jamming organist and singer Gregg, who’s been known to stretch a single song past the 40-minute mark with plenty of tangents to keep the trip interesting. Allman plays here behind his upcoming T-Bone Burnett-produced album Low Country Blues—his first release since 1997’s Searching For Simplicity—featuring covers of blues giants Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and Buddy Guy.
