Gregory Alan Isakov
Gregory Alan Isakov’s power comes in the subtlety of his croon. The singer-songwriter’s soft-spoken style delivers beautiful tales of lost love and wide open spaces over muted guitar and cello melodies. Isakov’s take on modern folk is much like his contemporary (and occasional collaborator) Brandi Carlile: Both artists choose the simplicity of unfiltered voices, with a mild country twang thrown in, to tell a story. The Boulder transplant’s 2009 release, This Empty Northern Hemisphere, is a collection of quiet, traditionally styled songs—many of which feature Carlile—along with a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong.”
