Harlem Shakes

Armed with tight, giddy songs and unconfined instrumentation, Brooklyn band Harlem Shakes plays absorbing rock of an alternately smart and spirited sort. Their debut album, Technicolor Health, is a heavily textured collection of sweet-yet-brooding pop anthems: Singer Lexy Benaim whines into the mic without a hint of melancholy or remorse, while his bandmates waver between choral unity and instrumental rock autonomy. It all makes for catchy tunes that testify for sincere showmanship and the redeeming power of pop.
