Artist Harmonious Wail

Like a garden overrun by kitschy lawn ornaments, Harmonious Wail screams whimsy. Drawing in a deep breath of Django Reinhardt’s gypsy swing and blowing it back out in a breathy coo, the jazz ensemble winds tightly knit grooves around singer Maggie Delaney-Potthoff’s passive-aggressive purring on songs like the lumbering “I Like To Feel My Bones,” from 2008’s Resist Temptation. The NPR regulars display a sneaky sense of humor that occasionally rears its head in extremely obvious expression, like “The Vegan Zombie’s Lament” off 2010’s album of the same name, but the delicate intensity and playful arrangements do more than enough to overcome any preciousness with pure charm.
