Chicago's Head Of Skulls understands the point of the power trio: To make pulverizing rock without pretense, cutting the wussy synths and indulgent guitar solos down to rock's core elements. Fronted by Chris Hansen of grungy Chicago veterans Pinebender, the band uses hustling beats and sharp, biting riffs to back Hansen's angsty, snappy vocals—a not-so-revolutionary mixture that produces reliably enjoyable post-punk. The band follows its noisy, uptempo EP The Liquid Ball, with its debut full-length, You Became Your Mind, which finally sees release after being in the works since May 2008.
