Helmet’s far-reaching popularity has been a slow and steady burn, sparked initially with 1992’s major label debut Meantime. (The record set off two hits for Helmet, its best-known anthems “In The Meantime” and “Unsung.”) Led by vocalist-guitarist and sole original member Page Hamilton, the reunited Helmet is about as straightforward as it comes: a real meat-and-potatoes alt-metal band, heavy on melody and even heftier on the distortion. Although there was a long break between 1997’s Aftertaste and 2004’s comeback record Size Matters, 2010’s Seeing Eye Dog shows off a suitably experienced Hamilton. It’s certainly reflective of previous efforts, though it seems a much grimier take on the same past malcontents.
