High Places
High Places exist in their own world of organic, experimental electronica. The sampler-savvy Rob Barber builds watery soundscapes for vocalist Mary Pearson’s layered nursery-rhyme memes to float over, creating songs that induce hazy sleep as much as they move feet. Transplanted to Los Angeles from Brooklyn, the earthy duo released High Places Vs. Mankind in 2010, a dreamy, foggy second effort that is insanely tripped out and endlessly fascinating. A follow-up, Original Colors, is due this October on Chicago label Thrill Jockey. The LP’s debut single, “Year Off,” is maybe a little too minimal and trancey, but it’s catchy all the same with its clicking beats and Pearson’s thin but enchanting vocals.
