Artist Hockey

Force the guys in LCD Soundsystem and Phoenix to join forces and they'd sound something like Portland quartet Hockey, which blends funky grooves with bouncy melodies. The electro-rock on the group's debut record, last year's Mind Chaos, may not shock anyone in a post-MGMT world, but credit the band for adding enough wrinkles to keep any non-dancers from nodding to sleep. "Song Away" could be a just-discovered Cars B-side, while single "Too Fake" showcases lead singer Benjamin Grubin as the millenium's new Rod Stewart—his scratchy voice makes the comparison inevitable. But the real show-stopping track is the country-folk toe-tapper "Four Holy Photos," a welcome change-up to all the sweeping synths and a sign that the band has options for future records.
