Hollows
The four girls (and one guy) in Hollows aren’t too different from all-female groups like Vivian Girls and Dum Dum Girls in that they channel a DIY punk ethos that owes more to twee pop cornerstones like Beat Happening and Tiger Trap than the riot grrrl movement. But on their self-titled debut, Hollows are decidedly sillier and looser than their contemporaries: The hand claps, saxophone melodies, and “whoa-whoa” vocal harmonies on a song like “Do The Scarecrow” are a fun throwback to The Shangri-Las, while the driving organ and percussion on a song like “Shadows In The Dark” set a somewhat spooky tone that would serve perfectly as an alternate theme to Scooby-Doo.
