Quite a few bands walk a tightrope between being influenced by an era of music and pure mimicry. Cool and confident, Colorado-based Houses keep that delicate balance while spinning plates and texting relatives. Instead of adhering to the modern tendency to cut to the chase, organs and Southern-influenced guitar licks build a mood leading up to frontman Andy Hamilton’s vocals. It all adds up to something that sounds a little like progressive rock acts like Yes, but there’s a very modern touch at work that fights back any lazy pretensions. It’s not as if Houses are spearheading a ’70s revival, though. They’re just paying respect while doing their own thing.
