HOLIDAY SALE AT THE ONION STORE

Artist Hugo

Do you hate magic? Do you loathe whimsy? Do good movies make you want to puke all over your loathsome, hate-filled self? Well, then, Martin Scorsese’s Hugo probably isn’t for you. In fact, it’s hard to gauge who, exactly, Hugo is for. It’s pitched as a kids’ movie about a little French kid (Asa Butterfield) and an automaton he pals around with. But it’s really a film about the appeal of the cinema itself and, especially, the legacy of cinematic pioneer Georges Méliès (Ben Kingsley). The film may be a bit precious for some, but if you’re a sucker for a $150 million advertisement for film preservation—and 3-D films that actually use the technology to expand the grammar of film language—then Hugo’s charms are fit to win you over.
