Artist Hurt

  • Hurt

Despite having some Creed on the brain, L.A.’s Hurt is surprisingly listenable, maybe even enjoyable and ambitious. The band’s also-obvious taste for Tool helps it pull off modern rock-ish metal (or maybe metal-ish modern rock) without completely falling prey to over-produced muck. Singer J. Loren’s voice keeps its rough edges instead of sinking into slurry Scott Stapp lows (and sometimes he takes a cue from Maynard James Keenan’s more aggressive modes and creepy, echoing overdubs). Whether that ultimately makes Hurt’s songwriting compelling is hard to say, but its approach at least makes for some musical variety on 2009’s Goodbye To The Machine.
