Ian Cooke
Ian Cooke started out in Uphollow, one of Denver’s longest-running bands, and eventually broke off as a one-man cello act. His 2007 full-length and accompanying 2009 DVD, The Fall I Fell, was critically lauded upon its release and remains a local favorite. Cooke’s voice dips and cuts through his delicate and orchestral songs, filled out with a looping pedal. His lyrics are aggrieved, if not harsh, but never without their charm. His latest release, the new Fortitude, sees Cooke collaborating on some of the songwriting and occasionally trading in his cello for piano, but his awkward and delightful voice remains the avant-folk artist’s strongest attraction.
