Born in Peru, raised in Harlem, imprisoned upstate, and now performing on the fringes of political hip-hop, Immortal Technique draws from a deep well of radicalism that makes him at once a fascinating character and a ferocious, battle-ready rapper. His songs are packed with revolutionary foment and bombastic showboating, and come topped with a dollop of conspiracy theory—a tendency that has only increased with time. The title track from 2008’s Third World, in fact, indicts the CIA, the Wall Street Journal, vaccines, Coca-Cola, and even Jesus (but only the “white Spaniard” version).
