Even casual followers of pop music remember the Minnesota-spawned synth-pop group Information Society, which spawned the ubiquitous Spock-fueled 1988 hit “What’s On Your Mind (Pure Energy).” But only hardcore fans can tell you what happened next—after a couple of albums that culminated in relative obscurity, frontman Kurt Harland (a.k.a. Kurt Valaquen) was the only member left for 1997’s Don’t Be Afraid, and he finally gave up the dream the following year. But things are in motion again for Information Society, which released the full-length Synthesizer and the EP Oscillator in 2007, and more recently the rarities compilation Apocryphon: Electro Roots 1982-1985.
