Nothing can beat the tortured timbre out of Johnny Whitney's ear-shattering caterwauls, but damned if his band Jaguar Love didn't take a hit when it became a duo after drummer Jay Clark departed in early 2009. Whitney telegraphed the shift in Jaguar Love's sound in a MySpace post, promising their new material would be "kind of an amalgamation of Daft Punk, New Order, and Black Flag." The new Hologram Jams suggests that either Whitney doesn't know how to describe his own music, or that only referred to the material they were writing right at that particular moment. Either way, the band has noticeably chilled out a bit. Make no mistake, they're still frenetic as hell, but leaning on drum machines to write has made them much poppier in a strange sort of way.
