HOLIDAY SALE AT THE ONION STORE

Artist James Blackshaw

James Blackshaw sounds a lot like John Fahey, which is a good thing for an acoustic-guitar player to sound like. Fahey, of course, wasn't the only gristly folk virtuoso to ever pick his way through an open-tuned thicket of strings, but he's a touchstone—and one that Blackshaw does justice. His albums—including 2008's Litany Of Echoes on the Tompkins Square label and 2009's The Glass Bead Game on Michael Gira's Young God—glide through lots of stirring and starry movements, and Blackshaw's command of mood does him good live.
