Songwriter James McMurtry hasn’t lost the patience it takes to let stories and images unspool through the course of tense folk and blues tunes, which he often sets in our aggrieved present. His songs are a great deal more vivid when he starts with the individual and moves outward, instead of just spouting off at the big picture and obvious targets. McMurtry’s most recent album, 2008’s Just Us Kids took on the difficult task of threading through America’s internal cultural tensions, war, poverty, Katrina, and more; results range from startling (the broken household of “Fire Line Road”) to predictable (betcha can’t guess who “Cheney’s Toy” is).
