They might be upstarts, but JC Brooks And The Uptown Sound are kind of nu-soul sensations. Their live shows are as authentic and charmingly raw as a scratchy James Brown record. Sporting suits like the best smooth crooner, the group churns and burns through classic-sounding soul cuts and even a perfect cover of Wilco’s “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart.” Frontman Jayson “JC” Brooks has a soul-worn staccato voice, movie-star good looks, and Sharon Jones-esque dancing energy. The band’s first studio album, Beat Of Our Own Drum, was self-released in 2009, but it’s not too much of a stretch to expect big things from this Chicago group since its new one, Want More, was released by Bloodshot Records, and it’s packed with incredibly tight wonders like “I Got High” and “Baaadnews.”
