Hip-hop in Milwaukee would have a much lower profile if not for JC Poppe, who’s been a tireless promoter of local acts via his great blog, Milwaukee UP. Lest anyone forget, Poppe also makes his own records, and does so at a prolific pace. The rapper’s full-length debut, Sleep Therapy, took its rightful place as one of 2009’s top local releases, no small feat considering the high-quality scope of hip-hop from the Milwaukee underground. After tapping the local and national scenes to help create the album and a crafty grassroots effort to get it heard, Poppe scored a record deal with Miami-based HiPNOTT Records. On January 24, 2011, Poppe will pull a Guns N’ Roses and release two records on the same day, the personal-minded Shadowlands and the politically oriented Tea Party.
