Artist Jemina Pearl
As the leader of now-defunct sass-punk caricatures Be Your Own Pet, Jemina Pearl cut an appropriately impish figure: a thrash-happy girl obsessed with teenage kicks like riding bikes, hitting up beer busts, and putting off responsibility as long as humanly possible. Reassuringly, her 2009 solo debut, Break It Up, makes zero moves toward maturity. If anything, it’s an even fizzier, flirtier play on BYOP’s romper-room raw power, full of chiming girl-group melodies and an ebullience that makes even the ostensibly grouchy duet with Iggy Pop on “I Hate People” sound sticky sweet.
