Artist Jimmy Wayne

  • jimmy wayne

Though Jimmy Wayne might often come off like so many other polished, soft-focus songwriters stalking Nashville these days, it's hard not to imagine something a little less pleasant lurking in there somewhere. Perhaps it's his backstory, which includes fleeing a violent family situation at age 15 and living on the street, or maybe it's the little hint of grit that stays in his voice even on his drippier numbers. 2008’s Do You Believe Me Now indulged in a few cheesy, overproduced flourishes but still had its tough-shit side. On his latest album, Sara Smile, Wayne co-opts Hall & Oates’ R&B classic of the same name with a hint of banjo and wailing violin—and even gets the approval of the duo, who provide backups.
