Jo Koy falls back on three things for laughs: big physical gestures, his Filipino background, and long build-ups. It’s his innate ability to relate his everyday experiences in drawn out, detailed stories—rather than one-two jokes with exaggerated punch lines—that makes his stand-up more accessible than most. Sure, the Chelsea Lately regular makes stereotypical Asian jokes (“I like orange chicken!” is a standard) and his inflated body movements can be interpreted as Dane Cook-lite—but, unlike Cook, he knows when to pull back. Koy’s latest release is his 2009 Comedy Central special, Don’t Make Him Angry.
