Joan Baez
In 1959, an 18-year-old Joan Baez made her world debut on the stage of the Newport Folk Festival, wowing her audience with her taut soprano and profound awareness of humanity. After recording her debut self-titled LP, the next year, Baez followed it up with 50 years of one of the most influential careers in rock history, collaborating with Bob Dylan and Cesar Chavez, either in the studio or on the front lines. 2008’s Day After Tomorrow marked both a return from a five-year studio hiatus and a new creative partnership with Steve Earle, who helped provide the earthy ballast to ground Baez’s more hippie-dippie tendencies.
