Jon Drake And The Shakes
There’s a laundry list of musical instruments filling Side A, the debut EP from Jon Drake And The Shakes, including chamber-pop essentials like trumpet, trombone, violin, cello, and glockenspiel. The band itself numbers from eight to 14 members, depending on who's available that night. Still, the music manages to avoid feeling labored or over-the-top. For every swell of strings and shout-along chorus, there’s a melancholy slice of Jon Drake’s songwriting layered over a gently strummed mandolin. The whole ensemble also keeps the songs light and uplifting, occasionally throwing in tinges of jazz and country—like on “Gustav,” a stomping hoedown that mixes the ramshackle sound of Neutral Milk Hotel and early Modest Mouse with melodic brass and string flourishes.
