HOLIDAY SALE AT THE ONION STORE

Artist Julian Koster

Sure, Christmas caroling is pretty much the textbook definition of being annoying and clichéd, but that bitter pill is a lot easier to swallow when it’s The Music Tapes’ Julian Koster twisting Yuletide music into something resembling the earnest warmth it was originally meant to exude. Last year Koster released The Singing Saw At Christmastime, in which he conjured eerie but soothing renditions of standards like “Frosty The Snowman” and “O Holy Night” from the titular singing saw. But it was not a one-off castaway album: Instead of hitting clubs behind it, Koster and friends actually caroled from house to house on each tour stop. This year he’s back to his old holiday tricks, caroling at local households that have invited  the “caroling ambassador” via e-mail to musictapescaroling@gmail.com.
