Kevin Seconds
Like many an aging punk, Kevin Seconds—leader of the seminal hardcore outfit 7 Seconds—turned his hand to homespun, solo-acoustic ditties. To his credit, though, Seconds has long dabbled in side projects of all shapes and sizes, and his new role as singer-songwriter hat seems less like a deviation from than an extension of his long career. It’s also refreshing to hear a former punk play folk-derived music without resorting to snooty traditionalism or corny, fake-hick accents. Even better, propulsive songs like “Slights And Snickers” and “New And Beautiful”—both from 2010’s Good Luck Buttons—retain some of the energy of old.
