Kid Sister
Hip-hop spitfire Kid Sister has managed to command a lot of buzz without releasing much material. That excitement can be traced back to her 2007 single, the Kanye West-assisted "Pro Nails"—and it's Kanye's cameo (and implicit championing) and Kid Sister's fondness for acrylic artistry that's dominated seemingly every bio of the Chicago MC since. The South Sider also known as Melisa Young sought to expand upon that bio with her long-delayed debut album, 2009's Ultraviolet, which peppers its 12 tracks of driving house beats with sassy raps about the joys of house parties, buying donuts on sale, and, yes, getting your nails did. This year, Kid Sister collaborated with Chicago house-music icon Cajmere for the club hit "Everybody Wants," and intriguingly spare and gritty (yet still totally danceable) track that endeared her to a whole new audience.
