Killah Priest
Wu-Tang associate Killah Priest made his name on GZA’s seminal Liquid Swords before stepping out on his own with 1998’s Heavy Mental. In the 10-plus years since, the mumble-mouthed MC has released six LPs filled with hard-knocks commentary offset by religious allegory, including 2008’s Behind The Stained Glass, a decidedly Wu-free album that gets remarkably confessional about Priest’s parting ways with former producer RZA, and finds him reflecting candidly on the way his career has fallen off since turning independent. Last year’s Elizabeth, released on Priest’s own imprint, doesn’t exactly prove that the long trip down was worth it—it remains swathed in second-rate beats—but it is commendable in showing Priest’s lyrical perseverance.
