Kimya Dawson

Kimya Dawson is probably best known as the lady half of The Moldy Peaches, the lo-fi duo that gained some notoriety when “Anyone Else But You” (off its eponymous debut, which had the unfortunate distinction of having been released on September 11, 2001) became a hit in the more cheerful context of the Grammy-winning Juno soundtrack in 2007, when the band had already been on hiatus for three years. Dawson has been making solo albums since 2002, and her latest, Thunder Thighs, released in fall of 2011, combines Dawson’s simple acoustic sound with everything from choirs and orchestras to beats produced by Aesop Rock. Her painfully sweet voice is still front and center, but the record explores some new territory with collaborators like The Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle; The Strokes’ Nikolai Fraiture; and her own 5-year old daughter, Panda.
