Phoenix is the nation’s fifth-largest city, and naturally that large concentration of residents has managed to produce a few unpredictable additions to the pop-music canon. But you probably won’t detect traces of the Meat Puppets’ desert-scorched punk in the straightforward pop-rock played by the Phoenicians in Kinch—the band hews closer to heart-on-sleeve hometown heroes like Gin Blossoms and Jimmy Eat World. Having crafted a handful of EPs and one full-length—2008’s Advances—that are every bit as radio-ready as “Hey Jealousy” or “The Middle,” the band has some curveballs in its repertoire as well. Here’s hoping the LP the band recently finished tracking contains further paeans to lesser founding fathers like “John Adams.”
