A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

Artist Kool Keith

A onetime member of Ultramagnetic MCs, Kool Keith has yet to top his career-defining 1996 album, Dr. Octagonecologyst, which stands as one of the zaniest and all-around best hip-hop records ever made. He also helped put producer Dan The Automator and turntablist DJ QBert on the map for their contributions to the album. In the years since, Keith has rotated through multiple MC personalities, including the time-traveling gynecologist/surgeon Dr. Octagon and Dr. Dooom, whose follow-up to 1999’s First Come, First Served finally arrived in 2008 with Dr. Dooom 2. Unfortunately, it failed to hit the mark that earlier albums reached, though Kool Keith’s live shows are still delightfully unexpected.
