A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

Artist Kronos Quartet

  • kronos quartet

Kronos Quartet has been beveling the edges separating classical music, weird rock, and jazz since the early ’70s. Past works have revisited Frank Zappa, Ornette Coleman, and Harry Partch in the stately, string-intensive style that the quartet has fanned out far and wide—from the terrifying score of Darren Aronofsky’s film Requiem For A Dream to album-length collections of reconfigured Bollywood music and so forth. The group’s latest is Floodplain, an impressively rangy set of music borrowed from the Middle East and reborn in its new context.
