La Dolce Vita
It took three years for Federico Fellini to follow up his 1957 masterpiece Nights Of Cabiria, which marked the pinnacle of his neo-realist period. When he re-emerged in 1960 with La Dolce Vita, he was an almost unrecognizable Fellini. Where the director’s early work details the impoverished with gritty naturalism, La Dolce Vita tackles the decadence of the rich and their entourages by tweaking reality to the point of absurdity. Marcello Mastroianni plays a Roman tabloid journalist who chases down celebrities and bizarre human-interest stories. Over the course of a week, La Dolce Vita illustrates how a life of champagne and buxom women can be both exhilarating and empty.
