Artist Les Claypool

Les Claypool’s distinctive bass-slapping and growling singing voice helped ’90s alt-rock jam band Primus catapult to more mainstream success than a band with songs like “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver” should probably ever have expected. In his post-Primus career, Claypool has linked up with the prog and jam scenes, while also dipping into soundtracks: His latest, 2009’s Of Fungi And Foe, features music Claypool wrote for Nintendo’s Mushroom Men video game series (about mushrooms gone hyper-intelligent after a meteor crash), as well as for the 2008 film Pig Hunt, about a wild boar wreaking havoc on the marijuana fields of Northern California. Like much of Claypool’s work, it’s a heady stew of rubbery funk, gypsy oom-pah beats, and psycho hillbilly nattering.
