A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

Artist Less Than Jake

  • Less Than Jake Dennis Ho
Less Than Jake’s breakthrough album, 1996’s Losing Streak, was well received by fans of speedy, hyperactive ska-punk, thanks in large part to non-stop grassroots touring. The band has stayed atop the pack since, not venturing too far outside its poppy formula but penning catchy songs nonetheless. In 2006, In With The Out Crowd found the band continuing to jog on the same musical treadmill, but still pulling in the fans. Dissatisfied with its major-label backer’s demands for a radio-friendly sound, Less Than Jake severed ties with Warner Bros. the following year to return to its self-made roots. 2008’s self-released studio disc GNV FLA—the band’s most recent output to date—embodies this return to basics and doubles as a defiant love letter to Florida’s still-kicking ska scene.
