New Zealand singer-songwriter Liam Finn inhabits a spacey little meadow where fizzy pop pleasures work alongside slightly odd little tweaks. Not that the guitar- and keyboard-driven arrangements on his 2007 solo debut, I’ll Be Lightning, are jarringly weird—they’re just stimulating enough to contrast pleasantly with the music’s soothing qualities, lest anyone drift off under the spell of Finn’s airy croon. In fact, even Finn’s sadder songs manage to take on a distinctly perky edge at some points, which is quite apparent on the recent full-length FOMO and his energetic, loop-pedal-heavy live shows.
