Los Straitjackets don’t do anything especially inventive as they crank out a steady stream of overdriven surf-rock instrumentals. But never underestimate the power of a gimmick, especially when it involves a band wearing Mexican wrestling masks: The approach has served the Nashville band well since 1994. In the past few years, Los Straitjackets have altered the formula slightly, releasing a covers album with vocals (Rock En Espanol, Vol. 1) and a double-disc of short songs aimed at landing commercial gigs (Encyclopedia Of Sound), but they returned to what they’re known for on 2009’s The Further Adventures Of Los Straitjackets. The band suffered a setback earlier this year when guitarist Danny Amis was diagnosed with cancer, but some proceeds from the current tour will go toward Amis’ medical bills.
