After issuing his first single under the name Songs: Ohia in 1996, Jason Molina went on a recording spree that made it difficult to keep up with everything he was putting out. It wasn’t long, then, before Molina matched his prolificacy with stylistic swerves (see: flecks of gospel, Crazy Horse-like classic rock). The arrival of louder sounds was accompanied by a name change to Magnolia Electric Co., though Molina has retained his haunted sense of self no matter the volume. The band’s new work with producer Steve Albini, the conceptual Josephine, is an attempt to pay tribute to its late bassist Evan Farrell (who died in 2007), which gives the band’s usual ruminations on loss a heightened poignancy.
