After a gritty career resuscitation courtesy of 2007’s Join The Parade—released after a nine-year recording break—Marc Cohn takes a page out of the Rod Stewart playbook with his 2010 covers album, Listening Booth: 1970, which you may have seen in Starbucks. But whereas Stewart plays it mostly straight, Cohn’s versions of hits from the early ’70s—like his hushed, bass-heavy take on Simon And Garfunkel’s sublime “The Only Living Boy In New York”—offer an altered image of recognizable classics.
