A.V. Club: Best of the Decade

Artist Mark Croft

  • Mark Croft

Surely every decent-sized American town is home to a few guys pursuing careers in shiny, radio-friendly singer-songwriter pop. Mark Croft is among the redeeming elements of that scene. Like many a young popster, he comes off as achingly earnest, but in a way that’s more prone to feel nice-guy corny than feigned and cheesy. His voice doesn’t slur into sentimental glop; it perks up into fey melodies and the occasional slightly goofy rap on tunes like “Superheroes,” from his EP The Possibility Of Disaster. His jaunty picking on other songs, like “Spinning Rhymes,” might not win over anyone who doesn’t already like this kind of music, but good on Croft for steering around some of the usual pitfalls, with enjoyable results.
