Marla Hansen
As a session player, Brooklyn’s Marla Hansen has lent her viola and vocals to the orchestral drama of My Brightest Diamond, Sufjan Stevens, and The National’s Boxer, amid more left-field gigs with Jay-Z and Oneida. The Madison native’s debut solo EP, 2007's Wedding Day, lets songs of grief and friendship emerge with measured grace. Stevens and MBD’s Shara Worden contributed to the record, but the core is in Hansen’s own plucked viola lines and breathy, almost shy singing. It’s a pleasant disc of spare chamber-folk that grows more familiar, and just a little devastating, on repeat listens. Hansen also plays in the string quartet Osso, which recently released Run, Rabbit, Run, a re-creation of Stevens' 2001 album Enjoy Your Rabbit.
