Artist Martin Devaney

  • Martin Devaney

Martin Devaney has been a constant presence in the Twin Cities music scene for more than a decade, whether he’s been playing saxophone or guitar, jazz, folk, or hip-hop. But he seems most in his element in rootsy singer-songwriter mode, brandishing slide guitars, back-porch violins, and country-twanged vocals. His new album, The West End, paints a clear picture of what he’s all about, with lines about old pickup trucks and wine drunk from mason jars. Devaney stops short of laying the ruralness on so thick as to imply parody, sticking to a nostalgic simplicity that comes through in everything from instrumentation to lyrics to the way the track listing is divided up into vinyl “sides.”
