Mary Mack

Mary Mack is the kind of comedian who has to inform the audience that she is speaking with her real voice. She uses shrill, small, anxious utterances that feel distinctly northern, and tend to magnify the sadness of her preferred topics: weight (she’s tiny), race (she’s awkward), and family (she’s Midwestern). A former music teacher and polka bandleader, she utilizes song with charming effect, often sneaking in self-conscious lyrics that would better be left thought than said. In 2008, she made it to the finals on Last Comic Standing, which is probably how she’s best known, but she also has a slew of CDs, including one titled You Either Wake Up Or You Don’t, which is most humorously pronounced in a Rugrats voice.
